Xiaomi brought the rear screen back with the Xiaomi 17 Pro series last year, but the company doesn’t want it to remain just a place for wallpapers and a few shortcuts. With the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro series, Xiaomi is giving that small display a much bigger role.
The company has introduced a new feature called the Versatile Back Screen, which lets users create and run small apps directly on the rear display. Xiaomi has already shown examples like an egg timer, water reminder and vocabulary tool. The Xiaomi 18 Pro series will launch in China later this month, although the company hasn’t shared the exact date yet.
So, What Is the Versatile Back Screen?
The idea is quite simple. Instead of giving users a fixed list of widgets and asking them to choose from them, Xiaomi now lets people create small apps for specific tasks. You can then run these apps directly on the screen at the back of the phone.
Xiaomi has shown several examples to explain how it works. You can create an egg-cooking timer, set a reminder to drink water or use a Pomodoro timer while studying or working. The rear screen can also show an English vocabulary tool and recipe recommendations.
You Can Create Small Apps for Your Own Needs
This is where the new rear display becomes more interesting. Different people use their phones in different ways, so Xiaomi wants users to create small tools depending on what they actually need instead of relying only on pre-installed options.
Once you create a useful app, you can pin it to the rear screen for quick access. For example, a student could keep a vocabulary tool there, while someone working at a desk could use a Pomodoro timer. You wouldn’t need to open the main screen every time for these simple tasks.

Xiaomi Is Building on Last Year’s Rear Screen
Xiaomi isn’t starting from zero here. The Xiaomi 17 Pro series already had a rear display that could show wallpapers, information and different app cards. Xiaomi continued adding more features to it after the phones reached the market.
According to Xiaomi, users interacted with those app cards more than 4 million times every day. Users also added over 3.5 million wallpapers to the rear screen daily. Those numbers probably gave Xiaomi a good reason to improve the feature instead of dropping it after one generation.
The Rear Screen Still Sits Beside the Cameras
The overall design doesn’t look completely different from last year’s phones. Xiaomi has kept the large rear screen inside the horizontal camera area, with Leica-branded cameras sitting alongside it. This gives the Xiaomi 18 Pro series a familiar look while adding more functions to the display.
Earlier teasers showed the word “Generating” on this screen, which led to plenty of questions about what Xiaomi was planning. We now know that it was pointing towards the new app-generation feature rather than simply a new wallpaper or visual effect.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro Could Power the Phones
Xiaomi hasn’t officially announced the processor yet, but recent benchmark listings give us an idea of what could be inside. The Xiaomi 18 Pro and Pro Max have appeared in reports with Qualcomm’s unreleased SM8975 chipset, which people expect to launch as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.
A recent Geekbench listing also points to Android 17 and flagship-level performance. However, benchmark listings don’t tell us how the phone will perform during long gaming sessions or normal everyday use. We will have to wait for the final phones before judging that.
Cameras and Battery Could Also Get Big Upgrades
The rear screen may be getting most of the attention right now, but Xiaomi will likely bring upgrades in other areas too. Earlier leaks point to major camera improvements, with some reports mentioning a 200MP main camera and another 200MP periscope telephoto camera on the Xiaomi 18 Pro.
Leaks also point to a battery of around 7,000mAh with 100W wired charging. Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed these specifications yet, so they could still change before launch. For now, the new rear-screen features are one of the few major upgrades that Xiaomi itself has shown.
What About the Xiaomi 18 Pro India Launch?
Xiaomi has only confirmed the China launch for now. The company says the Xiaomi 18 Pro series will arrive there this month, but it hasn’t shared anything official about India or other global markets.
Earlier reports have pointed towards a possible India launch later this year, but Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed that plan. So, it is better to wait for an official announcement before assuming the Pro models will come to India, especially since Xiaomi didn’t bring the previous Xiaomi 17 Pro models here.
The Rear Screen Finally Looks More Useful
A second display can easily feel like a gimmick if it only shows a clock, wallpaper or notifications. Xiaomi’s new approach looks more useful because people can create small tools for things they actually do instead of using the same fixed widgets as everyone else.
Of course, we still need to see how easy it is to create these apps and how well they work in everyday use. But letting users make timers, reminders and other small tools gives the rear display a clearer purpose. Xiaomi should reveal the remaining specifications, pricing and launch details as the China event gets closer.
