WhatsApp Bill Payments

WhatsApp has launched a new Bill Payments feature in India, allowing users to pay everyday household and utility bills directly from the messaging app. The new feature works through the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network and supports thousands of billers across the country.

Users can pay electricity, water and gas bills along with FASTag, insurance premiums, credit card bills and loan repayments. WhatsApp also supports different payment methods, including UPI, debit cards and credit cards. The feature is gradually rolling out to Android and iOS users across India.

WhatsApp Bill Payments Launched in India

WhatsApp announced the new Bill Payments feature in India on September 3, 2026. It expands the payment features already available inside the app and allows users to manage several regular bills without switching to another payment application.

The service is powered by the Bharat Connect network, also known as BBPS. According to WhatsApp, users will get access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories through the new feature.

Some of the major supported categories include electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card bills and loan repayments.

Electricity, Water, Gas and Other Bills Supported

The new feature covers many of the payments that users regularly make through separate banking or payment applications.

Electricity, water and gas bills are among the main household payments supported by the service. Users can also make FASTag payments, pay insurance premiums and handle credit card and loan repayments through WhatsApp.

This means users who already use WhatsApp regularly will have another option for completing these payments without leaving the application.

How to Pay Bills Using WhatsApp

WhatsApp has also kept the process relatively simple. Users first need to open WhatsApp and tap the ₹ icon available at the top of the home screen.

After opening Bill Payments, users can select the required bill category and choose their service provider. They then need to enter and confirm the account details associated with that bill. WhatsApp will fetch the available bill amount and other required information.

After checking the details, users can select their preferred payment method and confirm the transaction.

The process works like this:

Open WhatsApp → Tap ₹ icon → Select bill category → Choose biller → Enter account details → Check bill amount → Select payment method → Confirm payment

Users who cannot see the new option yet may need to wait because WhatsApp is rolling out the feature gradually.

UPI, Debit and Credit Card Payments Supported

WhatsApp Bill Payments is not limited to a single payment method. Users can choose between UPI, debit cards and credit cards while completing supported transactions.

This provides more flexibility, especially when different users prefer different ways of paying their monthly bills.

WhatsApp already offers payment-related services in India, including UPI payments and mobile recharges. The addition of utility bills expands the number of everyday financial tasks users can complete inside the app.

Users Can Track Past and Upcoming Bills

WhatsApp has also added features for managing bills rather than only making individual payments. The Payments Home section can show past payments and upcoming bills, making it easier for users to keep track of regular payments.

The app also provides a household bills summary. Bills can be pre-fetched, while billers that a user has previously paid through WhatsApp can appear on the Payments Home screen for faster access.

Frequently used bill categories will also appear automatically. Users can select the See All option when they need to browse additional supported categories.

Multiple Accounts Can Be Managed in One Place

Another useful feature is support for multiple accounts under the same biller. This can help users who manage separate bills for their home, office or family members.

For example, if multiple electricity connections use the same provider, supported accounts can be managed from the same place instead of searching for the biller again each time.

Previously paid billers can also appear directly on the Payments Home screen, reducing the number of steps required for recurring payments.

WhatsApp Bill Payments Rolling Out Gradually

WhatsApp Bill Payments is not immediately available to every user in India. The company has confirmed that the feature is being introduced gradually.

It will become available to Android and iOS users across India over the coming weeks. Therefore, some users may receive the new Bill Payments option earlier than others.

Users can keep their WhatsApp application updated to the latest available version. However, updating the app does not necessarily mean the feature will appear immediately because access is being enabled gradually.

With support for 22,722 billers across 30 categories, WhatsApp Bill Payments brings several common household payments into the messaging app. Support for UPI, debit cards and credit cards also gives users multiple ways to complete their payments.

For Indian users who already use WhatsApp frequently, the feature could make paying electricity, water, gas, FASTag, insurance and other regular bills more convenient without repeatedly switching between different apps.
