Stop WhatsApp Auto Download

WhatsApp groups can fill your phone with photos and videos surprisingly fast. You open the app after a few hours and find memes, good morning images, reels and random videos that you never wanted to save in the first place. If you are part of several active groups, this can slowly take up a lot of storage and also use your mobile data.

The good thing is that you don’t have to leave those groups or manually delete everything every day. WhatsApp lets you control which photos, videos, audio files and documents can download automatically. You can even keep automatic downloads on Wi-Fi while stopping them completely on mobile data.

Stop WhatsApp From Automatically Downloading Photos and Videos on Android

Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner. Now go to Settings > Storage and data.

Look for the Media auto-download section. You should see different options for mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming.

Tap When using mobile data. WhatsApp will show options such as Photos, Audio, Videos and Documents. Uncheck Photos and Videos if you don’t want them downloading automatically. You can also uncheck everything if you prefer to download every file manually.

Now go back and tap When connected on Wi-Fi. If you don’t want WhatsApp downloading anything automatically even when you are on Wi-Fi, uncheck Photos and Videos here as well.

Do the same under When roaming. Keeping automatic media downloads disabled while roaming can also help avoid unnecessary data usage.

Which Settings Should You Choose?

You don’t necessarily have to disable everything. It depends on how you use WhatsApp.

ConnectionRecommended Setting
Mobile DataTurn off automatic video downloads
Wi-FiKeep photos on if you want, turn videos off
RoamingTurn off photos and videos

If storage is your main problem, I would disable automatic videos on both mobile data and Wi-Fi. Videos usually take much more space than normal WhatsApp photos.

If both storage and mobile data are a problem, disable photos and videos for mobile data and download only the files you actually want.

You Can Still Download Any Photo or Video Manually

Turning off auto-download doesn’t stop people from sending you photos or videos. It only stops WhatsApp from downloading those files automatically.

When someone sends you a photo or video, you will still see it in the chat. Tap the download button whenever you actually want to open or save that particular file.

This is useful because you get to decide what takes up space on your phone instead of WhatsApp downloading everything from every group.

Stop WhatsApp Photos From Appearing in Your Gallery

There is another setting that people often confuse with automatic downloads.

Even after changing media auto-download, photos that you manually download may continue appearing inside your phone’s Gallery or Google Photos. If you don’t want that, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats and turn off Media visibility.

This doesn’t delete your existing WhatsApp photos. It mainly stops newly downloaded WhatsApp media from automatically appearing in your phone’s gallery.

You Can Turn Off Media Visibility for Just One Group

You don’t have to hide WhatsApp photos from your gallery completely. Maybe your family photos are useful, but one college or meme group keeps filling the gallery with random images.

Open that WhatsApp group or chat and tap its name at the top. Find Media visibility, select No, and confirm it.

Newly downloaded media from that particular chat should no longer appear in your phone’s gallery, while media from other chats can continue appearing normally.

What About WhatsApp on iPhone?

The setting is slightly different on an iPhone. Open WhatsApp > Settings > Storage and Data and look under Media Auto-Download.

Open Photos, Audio, Videos and Documents individually and choose when you want WhatsApp to download them. If you want full control, set the media types you don’t want automatically downloaded to Never.

If you also don’t want WhatsApp photos and videos appearing automatically in the iPhone Photos app, go to WhatsApp > Settings > Chats and turn off Save to Photos.

Already Have Too Many WhatsApp Files?

Turning off automatic downloads helps with future files, but it won’t remove the photos and videos WhatsApp has already downloaded.

For that, go to WhatsApp > Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage. Here you can see how much storage WhatsApp is using and which chats are taking up the most space.

Large videos are usually worth checking first. You can delete files you no longer need instead of clearing an entire chat and accidentally losing something important.

Will This Delete Your Existing Photos and Videos?

No. Turning off media auto-download doesn’t delete anything that is already on your phone. It only changes what WhatsApp downloads automatically from now on.

The same applies when you turn off Media visibility. Your old gallery photos won’t suddenly disappear just because you changed the setting.

Final Words

If WhatsApp keeps filling your phone with photos and videos you never asked for, changing the media auto-download settings takes only a minute. Go to Settings > Storage and data, turn off automatic downloads for the media types you don’t want, and download important files manually when you need them.

I would at least turn off automatic video downloads, especially if you are in several active WhatsApp groups. And if your gallery is also getting filled with WhatsApp images, change the Media visibility setting separately. These two settings together give you much better control over both your storage and mobile data.
