RTX 5090 Driver Issues

RTX 5090 was in a lot of hype. People were excited that finally a new flagship GPU is going to come. Reports came that it was launched last week and some people claimed that they even purchased it. But when users installed it in their system and installed the latest NVIDIA driver update, the GPU stopped working! Meaning, think about it, buy such an expensive GPU and it becomes useless after just one driver update!

Is this just fake claims or reality?

A lot of people are posting on social media that they bought RTX 5090 or China-exclusive RTX 5090D and as soon as they updated the driver, their GPU got “bricked”. Meaning, the PC is not even detecting them! But some people are saying that this could just be a big prank. Many people make such claims just for fun or publicity. Now how much truth is there in this, it is still a matter of debate.

What is the biggest problem with RTX 5090 and 5090D?

Anyone who has updated to RTX 5090 and 5090D is facing some common issues:

  • PC is not recognizing GPU – Meaning, your GPU is not visible in the system as if it does not exist.
  • PCIe 5.0 Compatibility Issue – This is also a major concern. Some people solved the problem by switching from PCIe 5.0 to PCIe 4.0 by going into the BIOS settings of the motherboard, but this solution is not working for everyone.
  • Power Cable Melting Issue – This same problem was also faced in RTX 4090. People are saying that the power cables are melting again, but there is no solid proof behind it yet.

PCIe 4.0 vs PCIe 5.0: Why is this issue coming?

Many hardware testers like Der8aur have already warned that compatibility issues can come on PCIe 5.0. The issue of RTX 5090 can also happen somewhere due to this reason. Many users switched to PCIe 4.0 and turned their GPU back on, but this trick is not working for everyone.

Does NVIDIA know about this problem?

NVIDIA hasn’t officially said anything yet, but if the issue becomes widespread, a driver fix or patch is definitely likely to be released. For now, those affected are being advised to go into the BIOS settings and change the PCIe mode or rollback to the old driver.

Has the RTX 5090 really been launched?

The biggest confusion is whether the RTX 5090 has really been launched or only a select few have this card? UK-based retailer Overclockers UK says that new stock of the RTX 5090 could take 3 to 16 weeks to arrive. If this is true, it means there could be supply chain issues.

Will RTX 5060 or 5060 Ti come soon?

One supply chain source says that until RTX 5090 stock is properly available, RTX 5060 or 5060 Ti might also come. These are lower-tier cards that come to balance the high pricing of flagship models.

Edward Snowden’s comment on NVIDIA?

Now this was a bit unexpected. Edward Snowden, who is a famous whistleblower, has commented on NVIDIA’s pricing strategy. He says that the RTX 50 series is offering “F-tier value for S-tier prices.” Meaning, the price is premium but not that much value. This may also be true as recent GPU prices are very high and the performance jump is not that noticeable.

Conclusion: What should I do?

If you are planning to buy RTX 5090 or 5090D then wait a bit. It is not clear yet whether this driver issue will be fixed or not. Until NVIDIA gives official clarification regarding this, it is better to consider existing GPUs or upcoming RTX 5060/5060 Ti options. If you are already an RTX 5090 user and facing the issue, then check the BIOS settings or rollback to old drivers. Otherwise, for now an older GPU will be the best option for running work.
