A 120Hz display has become quite normal even on mid-range phones now, while some gaming phones have already moved beyond that. iQOO is taking things a little further with its upcoming iQOO 16, which will come with a 2K display that can run at 165Hz.
The company has officially shared more details about the screen ahead of the phone’s launch. iQOO says this will be the world’s first smartphone to combine a 2K resolution with a 165Hz refresh rate. The display has been developed together with Samsung Display, and there are few more upgrades here than just the higher refresh rate.
iQOO and Samsung Worked Together on the Display
The new display was shown during a Samsung Display and iQOO screen technology event. Instead of simply using an existing Samsung panel, the two companies have worked together on several parts of the screen. The iQOO 16 uses Samsung’s new 2K LEAD 2.0 display technology and also becomes the first Android smartphone to use Samsung’s latest M16 luminescent material.
A custom high-refresh-rate IC has been developed for the display as well. Samsung and iQOO have also set up a dedicated production line for iQOO’s flagship screens, showing that the display is going to be one of the main highlights of the new phone.
2K Resolution With 165Hz Refresh Rate
The biggest highlight is obviously the combination of 2K resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate. A higher resolution should make text, images and other content look sharper, while 165Hz allows the screen to refresh up to 165 times every second.
The difference will probably matter most during gaming, especially in games which can actually take advantage of higher frame rates. For normal things like WhatsApp, YouTube or browsing, 165Hz may not make a huge difference compared with an already smooth 120Hz or 144Hz screen, but iQOO has always focused a lot on gaming, so this upgrade makes more sense here.

The Screen Can Get Very Bright Too
Refresh rate isn’t the only big number iQOO is talking about. The display can reach 1,100 nits of manual peak brightness and up to 2,800 nits of global peak brightness, while local peak brightness can go as high as 10,000 nits under specific conditions.
iQOO has also worked on colour accuracy and uniformity. The company says colour uniformity has improved by 39.6 percent compared with the previous generation, while brightness uniformity is better by 22.3 percent. Each screen will also go through individual colour calibration.
Touch Response Gets an Upgrade
Since the iQOO 16 is expected to be a gaming-focused flagship, touch response is another area where the company has made improvements. The display supports up to 5,000Hz instantaneous touch sampling, which allows the phone to detect touch inputs much faster in supported situations.

This doesn’t mean that the display itself runs at 5,000Hz. For most users, the difference may also be difficult to notice while scrolling social media or using normal apps. Competitive gamers are more likely to benefit from the faster response, where a small delay can sometimes make a difference.
What About the Rest of the iQOO 16?
iQOO has officially talked about the display, but the complete specifications of the phone are still not confirmed. Leaks suggest that the iQOO 16 could use Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro processor along with a separate Q4 gaming chip. iQOO is also expected to improve mobile ray tracing for games.
The phone could pack a large 8,400mAh battery with 100W wired charging and wireless charging support. Reports also point towards three 50MP cameras at the back, possibly including a main, ultra-wide and periscope telephoto camera. These details are still based on reports, so it is better to wait for iQOO’s official confirmation.

Launch Is Getting Closer
The iQOO 16 is expected to launch in China later this month. The company has already revealed the phone’s design as well, including a new Chasing Light colour with a holographic-looking finish. For now, the display remains one of the biggest parts of the phone that we know about officially.
A 2K resolution and 165Hz refresh rate sounds impressive on paper, but the more interesting part will be seeing how much difference it actually makes during gaming and how it affects battery life. With the launch getting closer, iQOO should reveal the processor, battery, cameras, price and remaining specifications soon.
