You are working, watching a video or maybe just trying to sleep, and suddenly your phone rings. You pick it up thinking it could be important, only to hear someone offering a loan, credit card or some random service. The same thing happens with messages, where promotional texts and suspicious links can fill your inbox every day.
Blocking one number helps, but spammers often call again from a different number. Thankfully, there are several ways to stop spam calls on Android using features already available on your phone. If you live in India, you can also use TRAI’s DND service to control unwanted commercial calls and messages.
Turn On Spam Protection in the Phone App
If your phone uses the Phone by Google app, open it and tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner. Go to Settings > Caller ID & spam and make sure See caller ID & spam is turned on. This helps the Phone app warn you when a number looks suspicious or has a history of spam reports.
You may also see an option called Filter spam calls. Turn it on if you want Google to filter calls that it identifies as spam. These calls won’t disturb you with normal missed-call or voicemail notifications, but you can still find them in your call history if you need to check them later.
Block Spam Numbers That Keep Calling You
Sometimes the same loan company, insurance agent or unknown number keeps calling even after you ignore it. In that case, open the Phone app and go to your recent calls. Select the unwanted number and choose Block or Block/report spam, depending on the options available on your phone.
Reporting the number instead of simply ignoring it can also help improve spam detection. But remember that blocking one number won’t stop the same company or scammer from contacting you through another number. That’s why it works better when you combine blocking with Android’s spam protection and DND services.

Don’t Block Every Unknown Number
Android also gives you an option to block private or unidentified numbers. In Phone by Google, you can find it under Settings > Blocked numbers > Unknown. This can help if you regularly receive calls where the caller ID doesn’t show a proper number.
But don’t confuse unidentified calls with every number that isn’t saved in your contacts. Turning this option on doesn’t automatically block all normal numbers outside your contact list. That’s useful because delivery agents, hospitals, banks or someone calling you for the first time may use a number you haven’t saved.

Turn On Spam Protection in Google Messages
Spam doesn’t only come through phone calls. If you use Google Messages, open the app, tap your profile picture and go to Messages settings > Protection & Safety > Spam protection. Make sure Enable spam protection is turned on if the option appears on your phone.
Google Messages can detect suspicious messages and move some of them away from your normal inbox. It can also warn you about messages that look like spam or scams. Google says the feature uses spam-detection systems on your device along with other signals to identify suspicious content.
Block and Report Spam Messages
If a spam message still reaches your inbox, don’t just delete it. In Google Messages, touch and hold the conversation and select Block, then choose the option to report it as spam when available. You can also open the conversation, go to its details and use Block & report spam.
Once you block the sender, you won’t continue seeing normal messages from that number. Google also moves reported conversations to the Spam & blocked section. Reporting repeated spam can be more useful than simply clearing your inbox every time another unwanted message arrives.
Use TRAI DND If You Live in India
Android’s spam protection can reduce unwanted calls, but Indian users have another useful option. TRAI lets mobile subscribers register for Do Not Disturb (DND) and control the types of commercial calls and messages they want to receive. You can choose Full DND or manage individual categories.
You can manage these preferences through the official TRAI DND service. TRAI also provides options through the toll-free number 1909. DND mainly deals with commercial communication, so don’t expect it to magically stop every scammer or random person who gets your number.

Report Spam Even After Activating DND
You may still receive promotional calls or messages after activating DND. When that happens, you can report the communication instead of repeatedly blocking every new number. TRAI’s DND system lets users submit complaints about unwanted commercial calls and SMS and check what action was taken on those complaints.
The TRAI DND app also uses crowdsourced information to help identify unwanted communication. This makes it particularly useful when telemarketers keep changing numbers, because you are reporting the unwanted communication through the telecom system rather than only blocking one number on your phone.
Be Careful With Spam Messages Containing Links
Some unwanted messages aren’t trying to sell you anything. They may claim that your bank account will close, your electricity will disconnect, a parcel is waiting or your KYC has expired. The message then asks you to click a link, install an app or call an unfamiliar number.
Don’t open a suspicious link just because the message creates urgency. If the message claims to come from your bank, delivery company or another service you use, open its official app or website yourself and check there. Never share an OTP, UPI PIN, card PIN or password with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
A Few Small Changes Can Reduce Spam a Lot
There isn’t one setting that can stop every spam call and message forever. Spammers change numbers, use new methods and sometimes make calls that look completely normal. But turning on Android’s built-in spam protection and reporting repeat offenders can remove a lot of unnecessary interruptions.
For users in India, adding TRAI DND gives you another layer of control over unwanted commercial communication. Use these features together instead of depending only on manually blocking numbers, and your call history and message inbox should become much cleaner over time.
