Lock Apps on Android

There are times when you may want to lock apps on Android before giving your unlocked phone to someone. It could be WhatsApp, Instagram, Gallery, Messages or a payment app that you simply don’t want anyone else to open.

Installing a separate App Lock from the Play Store may look like the easiest option, but you may not need it. Many Android phones already have built-in features to protect apps using a PIN, password or fingerprint. You just need to know where to find them.

How to Lock Apps on Android Using Built-In App Lock

The first thing you should do is open Settings and search for App Lock. This is much easier than following a fixed Settings path because the option can appear in a different place depending on your phone and software version.

If App Lock appears, open it and complete the setup. Now select WhatsApp, Gallery, Instagram or any other app you want to protect. The next time someone tries to open that app, your phone will ask for your password, PIN or fingerprint first.

Start by Searching for App Lock

That’s basically it. If your phone already gives you this option, you don’t need another App Lock from the Play Store.

Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO Already Have App Lock

If you want to lock apps on Android on a Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO phone, there is a good chance that App Lock is already available. Search for it inside Settings or check the Security app, depending on the software version running on your phone.

Once you find it, select the apps you want to protect and complete the security setup. You don’t have to lock everything either. If you are mainly worried about someone checking your chats and photos, you can simply lock WhatsApp and Gallery.

Other apps like YouTube, Maps or Chrome can continue opening normally.

OnePlus, OPPO and Realme Users Can Check App Lock Too

Many OnePlus, OPPO and Realme phones also provide their own privacy features. Open Settings and search for App Lock instead of trying to find it manually inside different menus.

If your phone supports it, you can choose the apps you want to protect and set up a privacy password. Some phones also let you use your fingerprint, which makes opening your locked apps much quicker.

The exact menu may change after a software update, so using the Settings search is usually the easiest way to find it.

Can’t Find App Lock? Try Private Space

Not every Android phone has a normal App Lock button. If you searched Settings and couldn’t find anything, don’t download another app immediately. Check whether your phone has Private Space instead.

Private Space is another useful way to lock apps on Android when your phone doesn’t provide a traditional App Lock feature. It works a little differently because instead of putting a lock over your normal apps, it gives you a separate private area for them.

On supported phones, open Settings > Security & privacy > Private Space and complete the setup. You can use a lock for the space and then install the apps you want to keep there.

When Private Space is locked, those apps remain separate from the normal apps on your phone. You can also hide Private Space itself while it is locked.

Samsung Users Can Use Secure Folder

Samsung Galaxy phones work a little differently. If you search for App Lock and can’t find it, search for Secure Folder instead.

Secure Folder gives you a protected area where you can keep apps, photos and other files. You can lock it with a PIN, password, pattern or supported biometric option.

For example, suppose you have some personal photos that you don’t want anyone to see. Instead of trying to lock your complete Gallery, you can move those photos into Secure Folder. You can also add apps that you want to keep separate from the rest of the phone.

Some Apps Can Lock Themselves

What if you only want to protect WhatsApp or one other app? In that case, check the app’s own privacy settings before doing anything else.

WhatsApp has its own privacy features that can use biometric security on supported phones. Many banking and payment apps also ask for a PIN or fingerprint before showing important information.

So you may not even need to lock apps on Android at the system level if only one particular app is bothering you. Its own security option may be enough.

Don’t Forget to Hide Notification Previews

There is one small problem people often forget. You can lock WhatsApp properly, but someone may still read part of your messages from the notification that appears on the lock screen.

Also Hide Messages From the Lock Screen

Open Settings > Notifications and check the options for lock-screen notifications. Most Android phones give you a way to hide sensitive content while still showing that a new notification has arrived.

This way, you don’t have to completely turn off WhatsApp or Messages notifications. The phone can tell you that you have a new message without showing the actual conversation to everyone.

Which Method Should You Use?

Your Phone HasWhat You Can Use
Built-in App LockLock individual apps directly
Private SpaceKeep private apps in a separate locked area
Samsung Secure FolderProtect apps, photos and files
App’s own privacy lockUseful when you only need to protect one app

If your phone has App Lock, start with that. It takes less time to set up and works well when you only want to protect a few apps.

Private Space and Secure Folder make more sense when you want to keep apps and personal files in a separate place rather than simply putting a password over an app.

You Don’t Always Need Another App Lock

If you want to lock apps on Android without downloading another app, first check what your phone already provides. Search for App Lock, Private Space or Secure Folder in Settings before opening the Play Store.

For many people, one of these options will be enough to keep WhatsApp, Gallery, Instagram and other personal apps private. You also avoid installing another app and giving it access to different parts of your phone just to add a lock.

So the next time you hand your unlocked phone to someone, you don’t have to worry as much about them casually opening your chats or checking your photos. A few changes in your phone’s privacy settings can do the job without installing anything extra.
