If you use AI tools on your Mac, then giving them access to your personal data is something you should be careful about. AI agents can do different tasks for you, but some of them can also ask for access to your files, messages and other data.

Apple is now planning to make its Full Mac Full Disk Access permission more strict on Mac. The company will add some extra controls so apps can’t easily get access to almost everything stored on your Mac without you properly allowing it.

What Is Full Disk Access on Mac?

Full Disk Access is basically a permission which gives an app access to a lot of data stored on your Mac. This can include your files, emails, messages and even browsing history.

Some apps actually need this permission to work properly. For example, a backup app may need access to different files on your Mac. But if a normal app or AI agent asks for Full Disk Access, then you should know that you are giving it much more access than just one file or folder.

Apple Is Making Mac Full Disk Access More Strict

Apple has noticed that some developers are using Mac Full Disk Access in ways which could be risky for users. You may allow this permission thinking that an app needs it for one feature, but Full Disk Access can actually give it access to much more data.

To avoid this, Apple will add some extra controls. If an app asks for Full Disk Access, you will have to take a more clear action before allowing it. So it should become more difficult to accidentally give an app access to almost everything on your Mac.

AI Agents Are One of the Reasons

Nowadays, AI agents can do much more than just answering your questions. They can search for things, work with different apps and even perform some tasks for you.

But to do all these things, an AI agent may also ask for access to your personal data. If an AI tool asks for Full Disk Access, then it could get access to your files, emails, messages and browsing history. So this is something you should check properly before simply clicking Allow.

Meta Muse Also Came Into Discussion

Apple’s announcement comes at a time when there are already some complaints around AI agents and user data. Some users recently raised concerns about Meta’s Muse AI agent and claimed that it accessed private messages.

However, Meta has disagreed with these claims. Apple has also not said that it is making these changes specifically because of Meta Muse. So it is better not to directly connect Apple’s new controls with only one AI tool.

It Is Not Only About Your Own Messages

There is another thing you should keep in mind while giving an app access to your messages. Your chats don’t only contain your own personal information. They also contain messages and information shared by other people.

So if you give an app access to all your messages, then you could also be giving it access to information about your friends, family or other people you talk with. This is why Full Mac Disk Access is a much bigger permission than it may sound.

What Does It Mean for Mac Users?

Apple is not removing Full Disk Access from Mac. Some apps need this permission and you will still be able to give them access. The company is mainly trying to make sure that you properly know what you are allowing.

If an AI agent or any other app asks for Mac Full Disk Access, then don’t just allow it because the app asks you to. Check why the app actually needs access to your files, emails, messages and browsing history.

AI agents are slowly becoming more useful and we will probably see more apps asking for these permissions. Apple’s new controls could make it more clear before you give them access. However, Apple hasn’t confirmed exactly when these new Full Disk Access controls will become available.
